HITT Final Debate: Teamwork needs leaders in hotels and real estate

Berlin (July 7, 2023). The hotel industry is not even perceived by politicians and other industries, let alone taken seriously. As we move towards a more sustainable world, in which the sector plays a major role, such disdain is felt with all the more force. The 6th HITT Think Tank concluded last week in Berlin with a discussion about teamwork and cross-border collaboration - and commitment.

Everybody is under pressure: Be smart and get organised! Reports from HITT and photos

Berlin (June 30, 2023). One thing is certain: ESG regulations will continue to tighten across the globe. Companies that are not prepared for this have no chance of survival. Solutions for investors and operators alike are already available, but without AI, the complex issues will remain unsolved. Other problem areas, such as the tangled web of green certificates, will (surely) require legislative intervention. The will to change is strong - and, among HITT community, the readiness to make a start was palpable. At the end of this, the 6th HospitalityInside Think Tank, in Berlin this week, the strength of will in the hotel industry was notable. An initial summary.

The HITT Think Tank: Only teamwork helps against ignorance and stagnation - Only three weeks to go until the event - Almost all experts attend for two days

Augsburg/Berlin (June 2, 2023). Covid-19 has shown it: The hospitality industry has no lobby. Not worldwide. This must not happen again in the course of climate protection policy. The solution for the climate can therefore only be: Collaboration! Teamwork! Inge Huijbrechts from the Radisson Hotel Group, Willem van der Zee from Pandox and Glenn Mandziuk from the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance (SHA) will analyse the power of the industry and its pain points at the HITT Think Tank. Only three weeks to go until the HITT in Berlin (26/27 June)! By the way, most of our 14 experts will be on board for two days - a novelty and proof of their confidence in this high-profile event.

HITT, Measurement (2): Experts filter the market and show the way

Augsburg/Berlin (May 26, 2023). In exactly one month, on 26/27 June, international movers & shakers from the sustainability scene will meet for the 6th HospitalityInside Think Tank in Berlin. The second day was almost exclusively dedicated to the topic of measurement. After the opening impulse by EYCarbon and two other experts, in the second part of this focus topic, three more critical professionals analyse the practice - and thus the large, spongy pond of sustainability certificates and measurement instruments.

Discuss the mega topic of measurement with three experts at the HITT, part 1

Augsburg/Berlin (May 19, 2023). Without technology and digitalisation, the path to zero emissions cannot be achieved. The "pathway to net zero" must be measurable, the tools a motivation to continue measuring. Only data ultimately certify the success and the - positive - changes for companies and people. That is why the HospitalityInside Think Tank (HITT) is concentrating very strongly on the topic of measurement this year. Florian Huber, co-founder of EYCarbon, explains how operators and investors can get a grip on its implementation. Also in this round is the lawyer Dr Felix Krieglstein from Jung Schleicher Rechtsanwälte in Berlin.

Sophie Herrmann from Systemiq will give the keynote speech at the 6th Sustainability HITT

Augsburg/Berlin (May 12, 2023). Where are the links between the many different system worlds in sustainability, what data is already available, what gaps need to be researched anew? Sophie Herrmann thinks cross-border and has already brought many different people and companies together around one table. The partner of the transformation consultancy Systemiq will therefore give the keynote at the HITT Think Tank, which will take place in five weeks in Berlin. She has lived and worked on several continents and now only thinks and acts in a networked way. Experience this likeable Munich native and cosmopolitan, for whom the knots in the sustainability network are connecting points for solutions. The perfect encouraging introduction to the 6th HITT and its main topic Measurement on 26/27 June in Berlin.

Siemens, HRS and Green Stay: The next top discussion at HITT in June

Augsburg/Berlin (May 5, 2023). One billion business trips were made by Siemens employees worldwide in 2019, a proof of power by this company that now wants their employees to stay only in sustainable hotels. For lack of alternatives, Siemens has now set up its own "Green Stay" criteria - in association with HRS. How much pressure can this global corporate client exert on the hotel industry? The two movers and shakers of this initiative, Eric Hofmeister from Siemens AG and Fabio Fornari, Product Manager Sustainability at HRS Group, will be asking YOUR questions at the 6th HITT Think Tank on 26/27 June in Berlin.

Augsburg/Berlin (April 21, 2023). Of course, it is tricky at first, a touch of panic spreads, but then you understand very quickly how the "social" in ESG can be measured. Many hoteliers do not - yet - know how to evaluate measures on diversity, equality, migration, working conditions, human rights. HITT Think Tank: Flora and fauna are disappearing, hotels can help

Augsburg/Berlin (April 7, 2023). When plants, birds or insects visibly and tangibly disappear, alarm bells should ring. When landslides bury hotels, the story of the risks has long since begun. However, the hospitality industry can take positive countermeasures right from the start to preserve nature. The wake-up call that Zanetta Sedilekova, a young climate and biodiversity risk advocate, will give at the HospitalityInside Think Tank (HITT) in Berlin at the end of June hits home.

Update on the HITT: Measurable and Social - More top-class speakers

Augsburg/Berlin (March 31, 2023). The programme of the 6th HospitalityInside Think Tank (HITT) on 26/27 June in Berlin is getting more exciting with each additional expert commitment. And more concrete, because the EU taxonomy is putting a time stamp on more and more sustainability rules. As of next year, companies will already have to take greater account of environmental, social and employee concerns. So which macro factors affect the hotel industry and how? Only the HITT can explain this: compactly in 1.5 days and with the help of exactly those movers & shakers who even work for the legislators in the background. The HITT Think Tank is anything but classic conferencing.

Berlin/Augsburg (March 31, 2023). Are some companies not finding employees because their CEOs don't prioritise talent acquisition? Because they still haven't understood that employee recruitment is hard-core sales business and has nothing to do with soft HR? Are many failures perhaps homemade? This is exactly what a self-critical expert discussion hosted by HospitalityInside and the recruiting company LHC International from Berlin revealed.

AOHIS Madrid: A financial balancing act for everyone, ESG a real estate issue

Madrid (February 3, 2023). The next few years will not be kind to hotel investors, that much is clear. This was already apparent from the opening statements made by the experts in the first round of discussions at the AOHIS Investors Conference in Madrid in mid-January. Yet there's one thing that owners and investors fear more than increased energy and labour costs, more even than inflation and higher capital costs. And that's the ESG criteria. They are the elephant in the room.

The 5th HITT was an all-round success: Experts explained, warned and motivated

Berlin (July 1, 2022). In this sort of atmosphere, I’m able to switch off; I can reflect and exchange views directly and in person... The feedback for the 5th meeting was very positive. HospitalityInside Think Tank (HITT) was significantly more positive than the previous year. Not because summer business is good right now, but because knowledge about sustainability has grown. The issues were just as complex as last year, but among investors, developers and operators, sensitivity to detail has grown. Twelve experts formed the network and took a look further ahead - with breaks in the idyllic surroundings of the Havel.

"And this is exactly the right time to make serious changes to business towards sustainability," she says, trying to motivate the hospitality industry. Hamburg (April 1, 2022). Investors and project developers have to rethink faster: Location, location, location will no longer be a decision criterion for hotel real estate in the future. A tree's rings tell the year's story – was it rainy, dry, mild, cold, stormy? Did spring come late, winter too soon? The trees around us, whether spruce, fir, beech, oak, ash, or alder may have different sorts of wood, but they all have a common ring pattern. That's just how things are when you share the same location, soil and climate.

What will our "annual rings 2021" look like one day? Will they be the imprint of all-encompassing climate change? Of the political climate, the economic climate, the climate of opinion, the world climate per se ...? Doesn't all this leave impressions deep within each tree, within each one of us? Somewhere a laboratory door wasn't closed property or a bat got eaten – and a few weeks later we're all working at our kitchen tables. No more work commute.

It's quite all right to be startled by that. Things like this leave their mark. But it's not only your little grove that's taken a beating, whole forests are dying, whole species, cities, industries on top of that. Everything has consequences. We felt it coming. "The world has become small enough that each act results directly back to the perpetrator". Now we understand what [the German philosopher] Peter Sloterdijk meant by that in 2010. But what conclusions have we drawn from this? Are we becoming action-less, heart-less, head-less?

Let's focus on the difficult tasks ahead, let's "venture progress" are the sounds coming out of Berlin! "Whether that will work out?" ... is the lingering doubt we hear from the German forest. If you shout out "flexibility, digitisation and adaptation,” the words "stability, solidity, reliability" echo back.

Does this have to be a contradiction? Or is it our NEW way of bringing seemingly incompatible things together? Trees stand where they stand and have to hope, for sun, for rain, for better times. We can change our standpoints, find new perspectives, even change climates.

Moving instead of putting down roots does not mean losing our roots. A piece of wood in the hand is like life: It has substance, warmth, structure. You can make many things: from it, with it, on it... And it becomes more interesting the longer you "use" it.

We wish you a strong 2022. In which we dare to venture something, to move and grow solidly. But without haste, without the rush, no running. Because strong trees do not grow faster for it.

Words for the turn of the year 2021/2022 from Gerhard Fuchs,
Managing Director of "die fuechse", a consulting company
for marketing, loyalty and change from Eschenlohe in Bavaria.

Munich (September 17, 2021). Will the "Carbon Footprint per Available Room" become the new benchmark? Very likely. Must hotel real estate be retrofitted in order to meet sustainability requirements or built differently in order to find guests or operators at all in the future? Yes. He wasn't the only one shaking up the hotel industry: With their critical, demanding and challenging impulses, 16 speakers pushed operators and investors not only to think further - but also to act! This week's HospitalityInside Think Tank (HITT) provided executives a content-rich, intensive forum, devoting two days to the crucial topic of the future: "Sustainability & Digitalisation: The Change Drivers."

Internet, automation, digitalisation and now sustainability: with the disruptions of recent times, the think tank format has become increasingly popular, additionally driven by Corona. Since 2018, HospitalityInside has offered the industry such an unconventional but challenging forum. Even then, there were many questions from unsettled executives about these big issues. Questions that CEOs would never ask in a mega-conference, but in an exclusive setting with an "off-the-record" character. The 4th HITT - in just two weeks - will again create this special spirit - also thanks to old and new sponsors who are themselves in search of answers.

HITT 2021: Accor, Engel & Völkers, IDeaS on technology as an enabler

Munich (July 30, 2021). Sustainability & digitalisation: one will no longer work without the other. Technology makes energy saving measurable, for example, just as travellers measure hotels by their "green" activities and book them accordingly. How much are the two big trends already intertwined? This is exactly what Chief Technology Officer Floor Bleeker of Accor, Andreas Ewald as Managing Partner of Engel & Völkers Hotel Consulting and Klaus Kohlmayr, Chief Evangelist of the revenue specialist IDeaS will discuss at the HospitalityInside Think Tank (HITT) on Monday, 13 September. Live in Munich and virtually.

Munich (July 23, 2021). A sustainable approach helps the planet, but also the shareholders! Natural disasters cost insurance companies $42bn in the first half of 2021, a ten-year high, according to Aon, Germany's largest insurance broker. Wolfgang M. Neumann adds: Don't just talk positively about sustainability, act! "Leaders need to embed this new culture," says the former hotel CEO. At the HospitalityInside Think Tank (HITT) on 14 September, he explains how hospitality leaders can achieve this.

HITT discussion on profound changes in sustainable benchmarks

Augsburg (July 16, 2021). Before investors invest in sustainability, they often stereotypically ask for benchmarks and scalability, thus quickly pushing the issue back to the operator. They are supposed to find the right tool. In reality, other forces now determine what happens. In future, all practitioners will have to operate with new "ESG KPIs". "Master the Measurement!" is the name of the panel discussion at the HITT Think Tank in September, which describes surprising changes in sustainable benchmarks and tools. Sparkling stuff for investors, operators, bankers and builders.

HITT Think Tank: Invesco, Zech, Soulmade discuss honest sustainability

Munich (July 9, 2021). Rejection is crumbling: The number of investors interested in sustainable building and operation is slowly growing. But those who already live it remain sceptical - still see a lot of greenwashing. So how do investors, developers, architects and operators get together? Three gentlemen have a decided opinion on this: at the HospitalityInside Think Tank (HITT) on 13/14 September, executives from the Zech Group from Bremen, Invesco Real Estate and the sustainable serviced apartment hotel Soulmade from Munich will discuss.

Two experienced lawyers from the global law firm Baker McKenzie show the complex, overlapping legal structure - and its pitfalls. Xavier Junquera from Barcelona and Dr Ulrich Hennnings from Berlin will speak at the HospitalityInside Think Tank (HITT) on 13 September.

Hamburg (June 25, 2021). What role will hotels still play in the new inner-city mix of the future? At the 4th HospitalityInside Think Tank (HITT) on 14 September, she will ignite a discussion under the topic "Urban Hospitality under Fire". The frame conditions are changing.

The new HITT Advisory Committee on the HospitalityInside Think Tank 2021

Augsburg/Munich (June 18, 2021). How do think tanks come to life? Through lateral thinking, networked thinking, thinking out of the box. This creates "oxygen to the brain of the business, and the exchange with people in one room will be like an injection of energy". This is how complex topics can be broken down, understood and implemented. The topic of this year's HospitalityInside Think Tank (HITT) in September is complex: "Sustainability & Digitalisation: The Change Drivers". For the first time, HospitalityInside has therefore set up a four-member Advisory Committee. The top-class programme is also thanks to these heads: Wolfgang M. Neumann, Tony Williams, Xenia zu Hohenlohe and Tim Davis. We introduce them and their views on the topic.

Investment professional Wes Paul makes the case at HITT 2021

London/Augsburg (June 4, 2021). How can sustainability prevail in the hospitality industry? Wesley ("Wes") Paul says, "Sustainability only works if you can make it affordable across a broader spectrum of travellers, we simply can't leave it as the preserve of the rich. Sustainable tourism, in its current form, is an expensive premium product, we must adopt technologies that will make it affordable so that the bulk of tourists can reduce their impact on the environment." Words from a finance, investment and technology professional with 25 years' experience at JP Morgan where he was Global Head of Investments. Today, he invests in technology himself and has solutions at the ready. With his networked thinking, he will open the 4th Hospitality Inside Think Tank (HITT) on 13 September.

Augsburg/London (May 28, 2021). It is no longer the sustainable building alone that is demanded from future (hotel) investors, but its impact on the climate and the entire environment. The focus has changed substantially in recent times. Construction companies, project managers, architects and designers are learning a lot and very quickly at the moment: the goal of pushing emissions to net zero is increasing the competitive pressure, says Alex Duckworth, Principal Consultant Sustainability, Buildings and Places at AECOM - a gigantic service company in the construction sector with 80,000 employees around the globe. At the end of May 2020, Great Britain was "only" worried about the virus, in January it is Covid-19 and the last-minute Brexit exit. That's why a large part of the speaking time in the 3rd United Hotel Media Podcast today belongs to the editor-in-chief of Hotel Analyst in London, Andrew Sangster. Munich (October 9, 2020). Corona has also shrunk the size of Europe's largest real estate and investment fair and converted it into a hybrid model. The previous six rounds of discussions at the hotel conference have been reduced to four. Nevertheless, on Wednesday there is still enough room left to discuss the most important "hot topics" of 2020: the operator black box, rents/leases and insolvency/third party use. In the end, a futurologist will give courage. Another panel on Thursday will focus on the current degree of digitalisation in hotels. The programme in detail.

The 3rd Think Tank on the digital Customer Journey showed: The fear is gone

Augsburg (June 26, 2020). The fear of the ghost of digitalisation is gone. Within four months the "digital maturity" of people has grown explosively, thanks to home office and home schooling. Families such as employees and company leaders have adapted, change their behaviour. Now it's a matter of living digitalization, integrating it, setting up the hotel group anew, analyzing the competition and guest wishes "differently". The new next goal is to turn benefits into profit with digital strategies and tools! The discussions at HITT 2020 therefore contained many imperatives.

How Retail & Hospitality boost turnover & service: Top Talk at the 3rd HITT

Augsburg (June 5, 2020). The hotel industry is trying to learn from the retail trade how to anticipate wishes and personalise offers. Conversely, the retail industry "hotelizes" its shopping malls and shops. Corona is now driving both sectors towards a balance between stationary and virtual sales. The "booster" for additional sales is "delivery", for both: shop and hotel must "deliver" their promises, just as the product must be delivered to the customer's home in real life or the wishes must be fulfilled in the hotel itself. At the 3rd HospitalityInside Think Tank (HITT) on 23 June, a fascinating discussion is set to take place between the shopping mall investor and developer ECE Group (Otto Group) from Hamburg, the luxury hotel group Langham Hospitality from Hong Kong and Sabre Hospitality based in Dallas.

Everyone talked about – successful – examples from all over the world, no matter whether it was about markets, retail, HR or the global categorisation of the industry in the digital world. A lively, intense day full of pragmatism and fun with a flying microphone.

The result of Alibaba's decision: Since then, it's no longer been the retail groups, but the internet and technology giants that have worked hard on efficiently combining online and offline sales and so to learn even more about the individual customers. "New Retail" is the magic word of the future.

The 1st HospitalityInside Think Tank gave rise to lively discussion

Berlin (June 15, 2018). The programme was electrifying: Most participants arrived very early. Only the storms over Germany and the airlines caused some to doubt whether they would make it in time on Sunday evening to the event’s unconventional kick-off in the 25hours Bikini Berlin or whether the seminar ship would raise anchor promptly the following morning... On Monday 11 June at 9:30 am, the 1st HITT focusing on Emerging Technologies got underway. As the Orca ten Broke docked again in the evening in Moabit, it had given birth to the creative chaos we had hoped and forged an HITT community eager to discuss the issues raised. A first impression from the premiere, also see the photo/video link at the end of this article.

Augsburg/Berlin (April 6, 2018). Orca ten Broke. This is the name of the wife of the German pirate Klaus Stoertebeker. Expo Real 2017: Dynamic conversations, relaxed networking – Photos & comments

Munich (October 13, 2017). Whether such positive sentiment can be beaten? This was the question many Expo Real visitors asked themselves last year. And yes, it could be beaten: In 2017, the real estate world was on fire and the heat was hottest where the hotels were, particularly around the best and the most popular. The number of announcements made was almost dizzying. But hospitalityInside also caught the odd critical voice. – To balance things out: images from the networking event “Bricks & Brains” which reflect the positive sentiment in the sector as well as photos from the busy happenings at the joint stand “World of Hospitality”, from the meeting with Thuringia's Minister President Bodo Ramelow and from the hotel conference "Hospitality Industry Dialogue" (HID). 12th ITB Hospitality Day talk about the role of metasearchers and hoteliers

Berlin (April 21, 2017). Hoteliers continue their fight against OTAs, but OTAs have their own problems now: they have to stand their ground against metasearch engines. In addition, mergers have also become part of the agenda in this segment. The middle class seemed to be drifting off further, admitted private hotelier Marius Donhauser. Therefore, Trivago's Managing Director Johannes Thomas is focusing on search results for individual as well as chain hotels more than ever. Because of these dynamics in the market, HRS' CEO Tobias Ragge sees great chances for local players, as he stated at the 12th "ITB Hospitality Day" in Berlin in March. But all in all, the entire distribution has developed into a "money game".

This is how one could describe the background to the "The Blessed and the Cursed" discussion during the ITB Hospitality Day. ITB Hospitality Day Talk about hoteliers' role concerning safety & security

Berlin (March 31, 2017). As strange as it may appear after the recent terrorist attack in London, many experts, including the highly regarded professor, Hans Rosling (who recently passed away), keep on saying that statistically, the world has never been safer than today. Yet, the risk is real - in Europe and everywhere else on the planet. Should one stop travelling because of it? "No" answered a strong panel of experts during the "ITB Hospitality Day" conference about safety & security. Moderated by Professor Stephan Gerhard, CEO of Solutions Holding, the discussion covered many topics such as: resilience, how hotels can be better prepared, who should pay for more safety and how sharing best practices within the industry could make the difference. All four panelists also agreed on one thing: talking about security & safety should not be taboo anymore.

ITB Hospitality Day Talk on successful food concepts for hotel chains

Berlin (March 24, 2017). It doesn't have to be a bad discussion when participants basically agree. This was clear from the podium discussion "From foodies to food design to no food: How hotels deal with the challenges posed by F&B" within the framework of the ITB Hospitality Day on 9 March, 2017. Here, consultants and hotel managers were broadly able to agree that the era of formal and staid hotel restaurants in cities were now a thing of the past. Everything is in flux: The good old Food & Beverage (F&B) manager from yesteryear is today the manager for F&D (Food & Drinks) or better, the man for FD&D – for Food, Drinks and Design.

Video impressions from WORLD OF HOSPITALITY and BRICKS & BRAINS 2016

Munich (October 14, 2016). It was hardly imaginable, but true: This year's Expo Real in Munich was even livelier and busier than last year. The big run on hotel real estate continues unabated - above all in respect of "safe haven" properties, as expected. Low interest rates and the competition for the little land available have given rise to a veritable hunt for real estate. Reason enough for intense discussion at the joint stand "World of Hospitality" which with 30 co-exhibitors was the biggest hospitality stand in Hall C2 and the core around which new hotel exhibitors clustered.

The lively first day of the trade fair was then followed by the exclusive networking event "Bricks & Brains", once again attended by over 150 guests – this time in the spacious surroundings of the trade fair halls above the North Entrance. The links to the video impressions...

"World of Hospitality" now with 30 co-exhibitors

Munich (August 26, 2016). Six years after the start of the hospitality Joint Stand at the Expo Real Munich, the stand now counts 30 co-exhibitors (23 in the previous year). At Europe's leading real estate and investment fair from 4-6 October 2016, the asset class 'Hotel' will be more visible than ever. Something which is also due to the persistent boom in the real estate sector.

3rd "Spotlight Hotel Investment Poland": The entire CEE with good news

Warsaw (July 1, 2016). "2015 was a strong year for Poland, and 2016 will be the same," Lukas Hochedlinger, Managing Director Germany, Austria, CEE at Christie & Co says. And he views the "basic trend" in other Eastern European countries to be "very positive", even in secondary locations. The discussion rounds at the 3rd "Spotlight Hotel Investment Poland" conference in mid-June confirmed the good "hotel forecast" by Hochedlinger. In the InterContinental Hotel Warsaw, over 250 high-calibre participants arrived for the conference - also a sign of the interest for (more) hotels and international investors. A first impression.

EXPO REAL 2016 reflects the strong demand in the hotel segment

Augsburg/Munich (June 17, 2016). The current hunt for new hotel locations is in full swing and the world's largest trade fair for property and investment, EXPO REAL 2016, is well preparing for it. Also, this is obvious due to the higher number of hospitality exhibitors this year. Their presence could well exceed 50 in October in Hall C2. For the joint stand "World of Hospitality", 28 exhibitors have already registered, among them nine new companies compared to last year.

From 2020, every second employee in the world will be a digital native. But what is a digital native? Demand is growing - Deadlines for "World of Hospitality" also approaching

Munich (April 15, 2016). The real estate sector is booming, the hotel market effervescent. This is driving interest in Europe's largest trade fair for real estate and investments EXPO REAL in Munich - and more specifically also for the joint stand "World of Hospitality" in Hall C2. ITB Hospitality Day 2016 with discussion on innovation and on innovation labs

Berlin (April 15, 2016). Innovation in the hotel industry has up to now often come from small and medium-sized companies; companies which have intensive contact with the guest and which pursue ideas based on guest suggestions and needs. Larger chains today work with "innovation labs" and trend researchers to turn their guests into fans. Will the hotel concepts of tomorrow arise in this way and how big is the impact of technology and digitalisation? A discussion round at the ITB hotel conference in March sought answers.

ITB Hospitality Day makes Google and Booking.com clarify their strategies

Berlin (April 1, 2016). Fighting hard to regain control over their distribution and most importantly over their customer data, even major players in the hospitality industry have lost ground over the years to OTAs and metasearch engines. Yes, hotels are resisting, but isn't it a lost battle? During last ITB' Hospitality Day, one session moderated by Wilhelm Konrad Weber, partner at Swiss Hospitality Solutions touched on many topics and what’s more, with two very talkative guests: Terri Scriven, Industry Head of Hospitality at Google UK and Peter Verhoeven, Managing Director EMEA at Booking.com. Both explained how dynamic and exciting the travel world was becoming, noting that many new disruptive players are entering the game (e.g. Airbnb). Consolidation, acquisition, innovation, disruption, etc. The distribution landscape is evolving and with it, mentalities and consumer expectations. So, who is fitted to win over the client?

ITB Hospitality Day: Humanoids still a joke but they will become job killers (short version)

Berlin (March 18, 2016). Seldom has a participant in a discussion at "ITB Hospitality Day" during ITB Berlin received such attention as was the case with Mario. Visitors would love to have hugged the 57 cm "tall" robot with mischievous eyes; at least, they all wanted to take a picture of him. The Japanese female robot ChihiraKanae seemed a bit more wilful although she had humanoid features and attracted a great deal of interest at the ITB Marketing and Distribution Day. There were many topics for discussion concerning robots and their impact on the work environment – with the sober recognition that the programmed beings are able to find their way into the hotel industry faster than anticipated. Fred Fettner provides a summary.

"World of Hospitality" also benefitted from the maelstrom of the 50th ITB Berlin

Berlin (March 18, 2016). About 120.000 trade visitors in five days – there have never been more attendants at the ITB Berlin; an excellent result right on time for the 50th anniversary of the exhibition, which all began in 1966 with nine exhibitors and 250 trade visitors. Today, the joint stand "World of Hospitality" alone counted nine exhibitors – and everyone was enjoying the positive atmosphere and took home good business. At least, this is the opinion of Thomas Berndt, Managing Director of KOS Objekttextilien International, and he surely was not the only one who appreciated the personal touch with the persons in charge of the hotel chains. Business is still done face-to-face, this was hard to deny last week.

In our YouTube video we provide impressions of our stand and also of the very successful hotel conference. The ITB Hospitality Day counted 1,723 visitors plus 717 in the livestream. / map

Good mood at "World of Hospitality" and at "BRICKS & BRAINS"

Munich (October 16, 2015). The first Expo Real day was for HospitalityInsiders the litmus test of ability and networking opportunities at the stand. We captured some of the impressions at the stand with the camera. As we did too at our evening event "BRICKS & BRAINS". Loop organiser Andreas Mueller regarding the emotionalising of luxury

Offenbach (June 12, 2015). The small, refined "loop" luxury trade fair in Offenbach has developed admirably (as reported in March/see link). The second edition this year also demonstrated how important the personal conversation between supplier (hotel) and customer (in this case, buyer) is and particularly in the luxury segment. "Luxury always starts with the person," said Andreas Mueller, "because in this segment, emotions are exclusively sold." The Managing Director of Lobster Experience, the organiser behind loop, believes that hoteliers and sales managers often convey too little empathy. Mueller is a follower of neuro marketing, the connections between the personal character and the dialogue with the luxury guest. "To know that my customer is a 64 year-old entrepreneur is not enough!"

4th World Tourism Forum in Lucerne covers the crust of the subjects

Lucerne (May 1, 2015). There were no industry-moving messages at the 4th "World Tourism Forum Lucerne" (WTFL), but there were an increased number of tourism participants with catchy names in exchange. Nevertheless, the original claim of the forum to become an event comparable to the Forum WEF/World Economic Forum in Davos is still quite far away: Host countries such as Azerbaijan filled the event ticket box, the Queen Mother of Bhutan beneficially enriched the programme and individual speakers such as Jeremy Rifkin were provocative. However, the true tourism leader is still absent – particularly from the hotel industry. Maybe this will change next year: After 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2015, the Lucerne Forum will enter China in 2016. 10th ITB Hospitality Day 2015: The Sharing Economy wave making everyone sweat

Berlin (April 10, 2015). Those who are looking for the fairy tale of selfless sharing will not find it in the Sharing Economy. On the contrary. A new branch of industry that makes use of missing resources and of missed developments within individual industries has sprung up before our eyes. "The Sharing Economy creates no better capitalism," believes Robert Wissmath, Managing Director DICON Marketing and Consulting Company, "but rather, it extends the present economic processes." It did not take long for Airbnb, the signboard for the Sharing Economy and great scapegoat of the hotel industry, to be the subject. The discussion of the "Sharing Economy" subject during the 10th "ITB Hospitality Day" at ITB Berlin at the beginning of March demonstrated that the hotel industry is now on the path toward loosening its opposition and thinking more strongly about synergies or even cooperations with sharing suppliers.

"The lifestyle mega trend will change our world radically and in the long term." 70 percent of the listeners at the "Luxury/ Budget Lifestyle Panel" at the 10th "ITB Hospitality Day" agree with this statement. Yet it wasn't until 2013 that the Chinese government began to actively support outbound travel. Whereas travel in the past was primarily within China, cross-border travel has meanwhile revealed enormous growth. At the same time, expenditure by travellers has also increased. "The average age of the Chinese millionaire is 39 years old, in Germany it's 55", Arlt reports. This means: Even young travellers often have a lot of money at their disposal. The typical Chinese tourist is now a thing of the past though. This occurred at the expense of the hotel industry under unequal requirements, complained discussion participants of international hotel associations at a panel in the course of the ITB "Hospitality Day". In contrast, P2P providers were convinced of attracting new types of guests for the tourist industry. There was little room for differing nuances within these two poles on the podium.

However, there is no expert forum for this segment in the German-speaking region so far. This will change on March 9 when the first B-2-B luxury trade fair, "loop" - "luxury on our planet", opens in Frankfurt/Main. Developed by the Lobster Group from Offenbach, the crème de la crème of hotels and providers of tourism luxury products as well as buyers of travel agencies and tour operators will meet there for three days. The concept of the event resembles a speed date at world-class level. hospitalityInside.com is the exclusive media partner of the premier event and will keep you up to date on this website with pre and post-reporting (accessible for all users).

The mood at the 16th Expo Real and statements about "World of Hospitality"

Munich (October 11, 2013). At Expo Real 2012, the atmosphere was slightly purpose-driven optimistic but this week, it was characterized by relaxed optimism. This could be sensed among the industrial exhibitors and visitors and especially among the new developed hospitality community in Hall C2. With 17 co-exhibitors at the 200 sq.m. joint stand of "World of Hospitality", the large hotel chains, hotel specialists and consultancies proved to be the absolute magnet among the trade show activities. The participants of the other stands of PKF hotelexperts, Motel One, and B&B Hotels as well as GBI AG were also not able to take any long conversation breaks. For two days, "World of Hospitality" was almost overflowing with people; bankers, project developers, owners, and investors came to the stand for the first time – previously, it was always the other way round. Here are some of the statements which made the rounds in the industry on the 16th International Trade Fair for Property and Investment, and about the "World of Hospitality".

Lucerne (May 31, 2013). "We would like to give the industry something back," said Kempinksi's CEO Reto Wittwer at the opening of the 3rd World Tourism Forum Luzern (WTFL) in April, which young talents of the industry were explicitly invited to join in Switzerland for the third time and take part in the discussions on stage. However, the demands of generation Y and reality in tourism diverge massively. On an international level, a panel discussion in which an Australian student took part, once again showed the enormous difficulties that occur when communicating with young talents addicted to careers. On the sidelines, Reto Wittwer explained how Kempinski is able to bring selected young talents into the GM career more quickly with a dedicated programme.

WTFL Lucerne: IT trends from a global perspective - The start of the data war

Lucerne (April 26, 2013). The figures sound phenomenal but they also entail risks: last year, there were one billion travellers worldwide for the first time; this year, it will already be 1.35 billion, and by 2050, it will be three billion! But how can these masses of people be reached in terms of marketing, how can they be guided on their travels, with which staff will they be served at the destinations and in the hotels? Last week, the 3rd "World Tourism Forum" in Lucerne (WTFL) provided food for thought on this matter. The daily routine of tourism will be influenced by three factors: internet technology, sustainability and shortage of talents. Here, an evaluation of the experts on IT: the linking of offline and online is increasing, the playful persuasion of the customer is top priority. The trend is shifting from an overflow of information to relevant information only. However, linking these pieces of information with other commercial models is still in the early stages of development. But the aim is clear.

Expo Real 2013: Joint stand becomes even bigger – Registration underway

Munich (April 12, 2013). Germany is sexy – and the Expo Real in Munich is too. This is at least valid for the hospitality industry in which many institutional and private investors would like to invest. At the moment, they see a safe haven in Germany. This is the same for hotel operators and developers who choose the path of Germany as Europe's biggest and strongest market, particularly for the introduction of new brands.

As a result, the 3rd joint stand "World of Hospitality" at the Expo Real in October, 2013 will once again grow strongly as a communication, presentation and contact platform: Nearly every co-exhibitor from the previous year has already confirmed once more. Alongside the hotel chains, Accor Hospitality, InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), Grand City Hotels and the Louvre Hotel Group, Kempinski Hotels, Marriott International, Choice Hotels as well as Derag Livinghotels will utilise "World of Hospitality" to expedite their expansion. Those who would like to co-exhibit at the stand or wish to benefit from the early booker discount must hurry – the positions will become scarce and the early booker period ends on the 25th of April.

ITB Hospitality Day: How 25hours and Unlisted conquer the metropolises

Berlin (April 5, 2013). Boutique hotels are substantially more complicated to develop and operate than the standardised products of the big chains. In their niche and with a growing, if also narrow target group, smaller groups in this area have nevertheless found a permanent position in the meantime and they operate economically successfully as two Boutique CEOs pointed out convincingly at the 8th "ITB Hospitality Day" at the ITB Berlin. Christoph Hoffmann, CEO of the German theme and design hotel group The 25hours Hotel Company, and his Asian colleague, Loh Lik Peng from the Unlisted Collection in Singapore took the floor for 60 minutes and proved: They are following a global trend absolutely independently of each other - that of the cosmopolitan individualists.

Expo Real 2012: Crisis as a chance - Comments on financing and trade show

Munich (October 12, 2012). Rarely were things addressed so clearly, projects offered so specifically, and financing such a prevalent topic of discussion as at this year's Expo Real in Munich. The final realisation that nobody is able to rely on the classical banks any longer finally lays the ground for the search for alternative (private) financing and the fine-tuning of our own ideas and concepts. Real estate and hotel experts are rolling up their sleeves. This is also the case with insiders of the hotel industry, who discussed the industry's current focal points in a permanently full auditorium during the hotel conference "Hospitality Industry Dialogue" last Monday. The realisation that crisis might be a chance was a recurring theme in many individual discussions at the joint stand of "World of Hospitality". The stand, which doubled in size compared to the previous year, drew a lot of attention again and became a magnet for all hotel-affine trade show visitors during two very busy days. There were 38,000 participants at this year's Expo Real – 1,000 more than in 2011.

7th ITB Hospitality Day on HR: Mass exodus from the hotel industry

Berlin (February 24, 2012). The demographic statistics have reliably forecasted it for many years: The service industries in particular will struggle with the lack of the younger generation. At the same time, the demands for a more academic, younger generation are piling up because the hotel industry is becoming increasingly more complicated. Hotels today can no longer be directed without knowledge of business economics. Nevertheless, is the young manager still to master the trade? All types of courses of studies simply spring from the ground. What is serious? And how can the industry ultimately inspire the young people? The statistics attest to the contrary here: A sort of "Mass Exodus" from the hotel industry. Well-known experts discuss this at the "ITB Hospitality Day" during ITB Berlin on March 8.

Berlin (February 10, 2012). Political riots, crises, attacks. How do hotels protect their guests? This question has not only been posed since the "Arabian Spring". 2nd World Tourism Forum Lucerne discussed global sustainability

Lucerne (April 22, 2011). The path to a sustained world is still broad, very broad. The world still exists in contradictions: The rich west thinks about it, but does not want to pay for it. "Emerging markets" ask only for material prosperity and up to now, the discussion there about "sustainability" takes place only with a few heads of the uppermost hierarchy. On the one hand, the first "green" hotels and tourism concepts are sprouting up and on the other hand, there are always new low-cost airlines originating that seek only growth. And the desire for global travel rises and rises … In closing, these were the great contradictions in sustainability development that got stuck in the minds of the approximately 200 participants of the 2nd World Tourism Forum Lucerne (WTF) last week. And the knowledge that even the executives who were present in Lucerne cannot (still) change very much. Concrete knowledge or even decisions were missing in the end. But there were also too few potent decision makers present.

ITB Asia and Singapore Hotels highlight new challenges

Singapore (November 5, 2010). Exhibitors in Asia focused strongly on MICE business as conferences and incentives generate a higher yield than package-deals do, the organisers of the ITB Asia, Messe Berlin (Singapore), noted this year. However, meeting business remains volatile, especially in the luxury segment, as one discussion during the 3rd ITB Asia two weeks ago revealed. "Today we negotiate expectations," one expert described from the podium. Off stage, new hotels fan new expectations and competition. The new Marina Bay Sands complex in Singapore is a symbol here. Its three towers and 2,500 rooms form an event and guest factory from which both established and new hotels alike would like to profit.

Nevertheless industry cautiously optimistic at IHC Venice

Venice (October 29, 2010). A mood of cautious optimism infused this autumn’s International Hotel Conference (IHC) in Venice. Andrew Sangster, moderator of the opening plenary session told the audience of hoteliers, investors, lawyers, consultants, architects and suppliers that it was about a tale of two recessions. Borrowing from Charles Dicken’s novel “A Tale of Two Cities”, Sangster saw the “worst of times” being the declines in GDP and double digit drops in RevPAR. The “best of times” being the lower than expected levels of unemployment rates and foreclosures.

Munich (October 8, 2010). The second networking event BRICKS & BRAINS of hospitalityInside attracted much attention last Monday evening… Encouraged by the positive spirit at the real estate trade fair Expo Real, enough reasons were found to talk and exchange evaluations over a cultivated glass of wine and "flying" gourmet snacks provided by the Kempinski Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten from Munich. Where will the capital come from in future, when will the banks be open to franchising, how long will the budget boom go on, which hotel concepts make sense? Only 150 invited guests are welcome to BRICKS & BRAINS, even the media has to stay outside. Therefore, there are only nice photos to mark the event, but no comments... hospitalityInside would like to thank its partners for making this event a relaxing and inspiring occasion! - To the PHOTO GALLERY? 3rd ITB Asia: trade fair shows extremes and opportunities in the mega market

Singapore (October 29, 2010). After a six-percent increase in the number of exhibitors, the 3rd ITB Asia closed with a plus of visitor numbers too: This year, there were 6,606 visitors - 7.4% more than the previous year. These figures show that the ITB Asia in Singapore is slowly being accepted as a travel trade fair in the Far East. This year's additional programmes – the expert panels – seemed to be in touch with the times with the new mixture. The B2B trade fair is growing; however, it is still small compared to the ITB Berlin and therefore it is quite easy to become familiar with the trends in Asia very quickly. At the luxury meetings there are similar trends recognisable but glaring differences in technology trends. In the Asian mega market, where many touristic and business areas have not been developed yet, speed is dominating and not quality.

"Healthcare meets Tourism": Concept decides real estate type

Munich (July 16, 2010). The boundaries marking the difference between a hotel offering medical services, private clinic offering hotel services and a public clinic with hospitality services are fluid. The greater the focus on medical services, the more expensive the investment. Siemens' Hospitality One identified eight different categories of medical and hospitality combination in one study which was cited at the "Healthcare meets Tourism" symposium in Munich two weeks ago. Case studies conducted by two successful health hotels showed how the offer must be shaped in this young niche. Investors remain cautious though: The market is still not transparent enough, though the potential is meanwhile huge.

Berlin (July 9, 2010). Everything today is hybrid – from the car to the contract. And now, it seems, so too is the human being. He or she has become a hybrid thinker. After two decades of standardisation and controlling, the hybrid thinker finally puts paid to copycats and benchmark junkies. The future is concerned with the following question: Can things be seen and shaped differently in future? The new power is in seeing, feeling, smelling and forming, in questioning and redefining. David Bosshart, CEO of the Gottlieb Dudweiler Institute (GDI) in Zurich, and Robert Thiemann, Editor in Chief of the design magazine "Frame" in Amsterdam, attempted to describe the new ways of thinking whilst speaking at the Design Hotels "Future Forum" in Berlin. This turns almost everything on its head.

"Health Care meets Tourism" workshop: Cure destinations are perfect

Munich (July 9, 2010). The potential is tremendous but where are the investors? Health properties are promising reliable and stable yields; however, the scepticism concerning this new market segment remains high. One reason for this are lacking definitions and missing elaborate concepts, which can be focused either on tourism and guests or on hospitals and patients. Predestined for the establishment of health properties are, among others, health resorts and therapeutic spas. However, they have to do image work and raise awareness as well, just like the advocates of health properties. But the demographic development is playing into their hands in the meantime. The first workshop of the leading Austrian tourism consultancy Kohl & Partner in Germany attracted about 50 interested people from various industries last Monday. In the Hilton Munich Park, a lively discussion about the mixing of destinations and real estate, health and medical tourism took place. hospitalityInside.com was media partner of this premiere.

Last week, during the "Future Forum" of Design Hotels in Berlin, the researchers characterised the society's future in vivid descriptions and colourful pictures from which the trends of the hotel industry and tourism will also develop. This means, only lateral thinking is in, well-known mechanisms are being turned upside down and everything questioned. Internet and retail are connecting more closely and becoming pioneers at collecting customer desires. Working times and methods will become more flexible and the subject of environment will finally change travel behaviour. The audience listened three hours to a flood of trends.

ITB Hospitality Day: Innovation panel pleading a mental restart

Berlin (March 26, 2010). When talking about innovation in almost any subject the immediate thought is to look at the influence of technology and within that broad term specifically the information technology revolution in which we live. Secondly, and especially in the physical world of the hotel environment, the effect of new designs, materials and building techniques would be considered of importance with respect to innovation. It is therefore with some credit and not a little bit of surprise that the panel discussing “Innovation: The prescription for bland hotels” at this year’s 5th "ITB Hospitality Day" during ITB Berlin barely touched on these topics preferring to focus more on the ‘software’ - the people that bring ideas to the business.

Enough capital but no financing - 7th IHC in Venice

Venice (October 30, 2009). On the market, there is still enough capital and there are many excellent operators, but there are no banks willing to finance. Apparently, they form the "bottleneck" in most European states. At the 7th International Hotel Conference (IHC) in Venice last week, the panel discussions emphasised the key note of the statements made at the Expo Real in Munich before. Moreover, a discussion revealed the growing gap between real hoteliers who are able to do the maths (Moevenpick), and managers that have mutated pure controllers (Hilton). The bankers are only asking for one thing: collateral. According to some financial experts, the loss of value with respect to hotel real estate will continue until the middle of 2010. Until then, there are many bargains on the market. The mixture of the 300 participants of the conference reflected the changed economic situation too: For the first time, the consultants dominated the IHC. Only a couple of bankers and financiers had the courage to come to Venice, renowned chains, such as Starwood Hotels or Rezidor - long-year sponsors - were missing entirely.

Munich (October 9, 2009). Rationality and quality are back. The financial and economic crisis also has positive effects, as could be seen at Expo Real, Europe's leading commercial real estate fair, this week. The exhibition halls were well filled despite the crisis and some (city) stands made visitors marvel just at their size. Russian and Arabian exhibitors were obviously missing. There was general consent about the desire for content and clues in the current situation. Therefore, the Expo Real forums were well frequented. The "Hospitality Industry Dialogue" hotel conference was also happy about well-attended panel discussions, and the first networking event staged by hospitalityInside and Expo Real on Monday evening was subsequently a great success. The sign of the times points to those showing seriousness, competence and endurance.
