Augsburg/Berlin (April 21, 2023). Of course, it is tricky at first, a touch of panic spreads, but then you understand very quickly how the "social" in ESG can be measured. Many hoteliers do not - yet - know how to evaluate measures on diversity, equality, migration, working conditions, human rights. Malin Lindfors Speace from Sweden, our "Social" expert at the HITT Think Tank on 26/27 June in Berlin, tells you. "In a year, everyone will be doing it!" Sign up!
The dynamic Swede is the founder and CEO of Ethos, a sustainability-focused consultancy based in Stockholm. For much longer, since 1996, she has also been taking care of certifications, standards and their implementation. Malin brings profound knowledge to the HITT event ship and will speak on the second day during the discussion about the implementation and control of measurement, which will later flow into the sustainability balance sheet of every company.
Assessing the social factors of a company is based on a simple consideration: Every business decision can have unintended social consequences. If you buy fruit from a local farmer or from the Far East, you need to know and prove whether your producers pay their employees fairly and under what conditions they work. Is there equality in the hotel or in the large corporation? What is offered to migrants, are their human rights respected? These are only the classic examples. Depending on the destination and culture, such analyses and processes become more complex.

Malin Lindfors Speace: expert |
Business must be social
Everywhere, social issues come into focus and the company must, in short, balance business and social interests. And for this, both the UN and the EU (taxonomy) already provide a firm, largely harmonious, interlocking framework, reports Malin Lindfors Speace. "These are internationally recognised formal processes that lead straight to transparency," she explains.
Companies are generally subject to human rights due diligence, which falls under the umbrella term "human rights"; the two are closely linked. Respecting people (employees) prevents harm. What impact companies and their business models have on human rights (employee rights) can be determined by specialists through HRDD, Human Rights Due Diligence. Investors and owners are also interested in this.
Malin Lindfors Speace will explain to operators and investors how and with which standards or tools the many requirements can be handled and positively utilised.
Expert Malin is one of many top-class speakers who will give the sixth HospitalityInside Think Tank a special touch. The main focus of the HITT this year is on "Measurement" - the world of measurable data under ESG criteria. Six experts alone will address this topic, Malin Lindfors Speace right in the middle. / map
The HITT plea for Social Measurement:
Malin Lindfors Speace, Founder and CEO, Ethos, A Scandinavian hospitality focused consultancy working on upcoming standards and frameworks such as GRI and SASB, the GHG Protocol, and the EU Taxonomy on sustainable finance.
On Tuesday, 27 June 2023, from 10.30am at the HITT Think Tank.
Her contribution to Impulse 4:
Practicalities of measurement, management, and control across ESG
Ensure purpose and traction: How is legislation and the UN agenda evolving to determine what needs to be measured to evaluate ESG factors, in particular the EU Taxonomy. How do you measure operational and embedded carbon emissions and - new - social factors, the "S" in ESG?
The 6th HospitalityInside Think Tank (HITT) on 26-27 June 2023 in Berlin:
Next level: Measure. Benchmark. Drive.
