Sophie Herrmann from Systemiq will give the keynote speech at the 6th Sustainability HITT

Augsburg/Berlin (May 12, 2023). Where are the links between the many different system worlds in sustainability, what data is already available, what gaps need to be researched anew? Sophie Herrmann thinks cross-border and has already brought many different people and companies together around one table. The partner of the transformation consultancy Systemiq will therefore give the keynote at the HITT Think Tank, which will take place in five weeks in Berlin. She has lived and worked on several continents and now only thinks and acts in a networked way. Experience this likeable Munich native and cosmopolitan, for whom the knots in the sustainability network are connecting points for solutions. Sophie Hermann studied political science and economics at the Free University of Berlin and at the University of Montreal. Since then, she has dedicated her life to sustainability - and initially focused on the topic of renewable energies in a political context. She then moved to Brazil, where she spent seven years analysing the environment/development nexus for the World Bank, then to Latin America, Africa and the Middle East. Her common thread was and still is the management of natural resources (land, forest, water), the preservation of which promotes thriving landscapes and agriculture. In the worst case, however, mismanagement leads to natural disasters. "I have seen first-hand how the hospitality industry around the world is also exposed to such scenarios," she says.

As a consultant, she worked in the public and private sectors, including for McKinsey in Germany. Her disruptive and global thinking has led her to Systemiq, which was only founded in 2016 - a company that resembles an NGO, driven by a mission, but collects bare facts (data), consolidates them, transports them and in the process - at the table and in the minds - breaks down boundaries between countries, industries, investors and politicians. The goal is to bring ecosystems back into balance.

It is therefore not surprising that one of Sophie Herrmann's focal points is the Circular Economy. She paints a simple picture: If humanity avoids waste and lives in a no-more-fossil world with recycled materials and renewable energy, there is a chance for a functioning society in balance with an economic system.

"At Systemiq we look at existing systems, for example in mobility or food," she explains her approach, "we look at everything from all perspectives according to how these systems benefit people and how to connect the actors and services of these industry (systems)."

Tourism and the hotel industry also form a system of importance: the hospitality industry is responsible for a large part of global emissions, she reminds everyone, "but conversely, one must also see that this industry also suffers very strongly from the consequences of climate change," she adds. By the way, 80% of tourism takes place in coastal regions. And there, the masses not only destroy nature and biodiversity, but also entire cultures.
