ITB Asia and Singapore Hotels highlight new challenges

Singapore (November 5, 2010). Exhibitors in Asia focused strongly on MICE business as conferences and incentives generate a higher yield than package-deals do, the organisers of the ITB Asia, Messe Berlin (Singapore), noted this year. However, meeting business remains volatile, especially in the luxury segment, as one discussion during the 3rd ITB Asia two weeks ago revealed. "Today we negotiate expectations," one expert described from the podium. Off stage, new hotels fan new expectations and competition. The new Marina Bay Sands complex in Singapore is a symbol here. Its three towers and 2,500 rooms form an event and guest factory from which both established and new hotels alike would like to profit.

Singapore (October 22, 2010). The figures of the 3rd ITB Asia prove the general trend to recovery and the new depth in the tourism business. The sister trade fair of the ITB Berlin records six percent more exhibitors and an increased quality consciousness among the purchasers, as hospitalityInside.com was able to find out in Singapore this week. Again, the hotel industry presented the largest percentage of exhibitors.

3rd ITB Asia: trade fair shows extremes and opportunities in the mega market

Singapore (October 29, 2010). After a six-percent increase in the number of exhibitors, the 3rd ITB Asia closed with a plus of visitor numbers too: This year, there were 6,606 visitors - 7.4% more than the previous year. These figures show that the ITB Asia in Singapore is slowly being accepted as a travel trade fair in the Far East. This year's additional programmes – the expert panels – seemed to be in touch with the times with the new mixture. The B2B trade fair is growing; however, it is still small compared to the ITB Berlin and therefore it is quite easy to become familiar with the trends in Asia very quickly. At the luxury meetings there are similar trends recognisable but glaring differences in technology trends. In the Asian mega market, where many touristic and business areas have not been developed yet, speed is dominating and not quality.

With the 2nd ITB Asia in Singapore, MICE moves into focus

Singapore/Berlin (November 6, 2009). "Yes, it was right to start up the ITB Asia." Dr Martin Buck, Director of Messe Berlin (Singapore) doesn't regret the expensive decision to create an Asian offshoot of the world's biggest tourism trade fair. The second time the event took place, this time in the Singapore Suntec Convention Centre, just two weeks ago, management were able to show good results in spite of the economic crisis. On closer inspection though, movements on the market are reflected - as they are everywhere. The hotel industry was accordingly less well represented. Those taking part, however, praised the high quality of the meetings. In 2010, the trade fair organisers intend to return to growth.

ITB Asia and Web In Travel to talk about the trend in online travel

Singapore (September 4, 2009). The year 2009 is being tipped as the ‘Year of the Deal’ when online travel in Asia will come into its own. Online travel agencies operating in the region are still reporting growth in transaction volumes albeit yields are down. Low cost carriers are expanding and aggressively promoting cheap fares on their websites. Hotel groups are also introducing online sales, group-wide discounts and value offers on their websites. It is against this background that Web In Travel (WIT) 2009 will be held in partnership with ITB Asia, October 20-23 at the Suntec Singapore Exhibition & Convention Centre.

ITB Asia Convention: Discussion round on Asia's current hotel situation

ITB Singapore Leaders Forum c map
Singapore (November 7, 2008). The "Hotel Leaders Forum" (photo) which took place during the ITB Asia two weeks ago is Messe Berlin's first crack at the subject of Hospitality in Asia. Chain and boutique hoteliers made no attempt to deny their insecurities in respect of the current financial crisis; some of their statements were certainly not heard for the first time by crisis weathered Europeans and left a certain feeling of "déjà-vu". But at least the Europeans were clear in their own minds as to the real extent of the problem: Asia is perhaps a little spoiled. Although expected growth has slumped from double to single figures, the rates are still good. Now hoteliers will have to learn to deal with market mechanisms which won't leave Asia unscathed. An expert also reveals trends in current distribution methods.

ITB Asia Premiere exceeded expectations - Size to be doubled for 2009

ITB Asia View Exhibtion 2008

Singapore (October 31, 2008). As it closed Friday last week, the ITB Asia (photo) had counted 6,208 visitors, 24 percent more than the 5,000 predicted. Thee result clearly exceeded all expectations organisers Messe Berlin (Singapore) had for its Asian premiere. Already, organisers are considering reserving double the exhibition space taken up this year - 10,600 sq.m. Just like in Berlin, in Singapore too, the hotel industry once again proved to be the trade fair`s strongest pillar. With over 200 large and small hotel groups, the hospitality industry made up 43% of all exhibitors. Starting difficulties at the first ITB Asia were few; the mood among exhibitors as well as among purchasers was overall very positive. Trust and confidence inspired by the brand ITB as well as in German efficiency and the ability of the organisers is high.

ITB Eröffnung Asia Pressekonferenz

Singapore (October 24, 2008).
After 42 years in Berlin, the first ITB (International Tourism Fair) outside Germany and Europe opened this week. The first "ITB Asia" received a favourable welcome in Singapore. The B2B fair began on Wednesday with 651 exhibitors from 58 countries. By way of comparison: in 1966 in Berlin, 12 exhibitors from seven countries held stands - and this year, the world's largest tourism fair in Berlin counted 11,000 exhibitors from 186 destinations. By the end of the fair this Friday night, an expected 50,000 visitors will have attended the event in Singapore. Messe Berlin, which organises the event, reaffirmed its intention to create a fixed place for the ITB Asia in the industry's appointment calendar. "We want to move closer to the Asian markets," Raimund Hosch, head of Messe Berlin explained of the decision. In Berlin, around one third of visitors are from Asia; the potential for Singapore (and Berlin) is therefore high.
For the Singapore Tourist Board, which supported Messe Berlin in the "Hosted Buyer Program", the ITB Asia sits well together with its tourism master plan of turning Singapore into a tropical shopping paradise, a convention hub and city with exciting attractions such as the recent night-time Formula 1 event. Politicians from all Germany's main political parties flew to Singapore to attend the opening of the event. More on the ITB and the current mood in Asia next week. - The photo shows (from left) Raimund Hosch, President and CEO of Messe Berlin; Lim Neo Chian, CEO Tourism Singapore Board; Ernst Hinsken, Federal Govenment Commissioner for Tourism in Germany; and Martin Buck, Director Messe Berlin (Singapore). / map
