Nevertheless industry cautiously optimistic at IHC Venice

Venice (October 29, 2010). A mood of cautious optimism infused this autumn’s International Hotel Conference (IHC) in Venice. Andrew Sangster, moderator of the opening plenary session told the audience of hoteliers, investors, lawyers, consultants, architects and suppliers that it was about a tale of two recessions. Borrowing from Charles Dicken’s novel “A Tale of Two Cities”, Sangster saw the “worst of times” being the declines in GDP and double digit drops in RevPAR. The “best of times” being the lower than expected levels of unemployment rates and foreclosures.

Enough capital but no financing - 7th IHC in Venice

Venice (October 30, 2009). On the market, there is still enough capital and there are many excellent operators, but there are no banks willing to finance. Apparently, they form the "bottleneck" in most European states. At the 7th International Hotel Conference (IHC) in Venice last week, the panel discussions emphasised the key note of the statements made at the Expo Real in Munich before. Moreover, a discussion revealed the growing gap between real hoteliers who are able to do the maths (Moevenpick), and managers that have mutated pure controllers (Hilton). The bankers are only asking for one thing: collateral. According to some financial experts, the loss of value with respect to hotel real estate will continue until the middle of 2010. Until then, there are many bargains on the market. The mixture of the 300 participants of the conference reflected the changed economic situation too: For the first time, the consultants dominated the IHC. Only a couple of bankers and financiers had the courage to come to Venice, renowned chains, such as Starwood Hotels or Rezidor - long-year sponsors - were missing entirely.

International Hotel Conference Rome tried to find answers

IHC - International Hotel Conference

Rome (October 24, 2008). Concerns over the current state of the world's economies and stock markets in general and the lack of liquidity or availability of debt finance in particular were never far from anyone's thoughts at the 6th International Hotel Conference in Rome last week. There was also a palpable air of resignation that things are bad, will undoubtedly get worse and that at least the next two years are going to be tough, very tough. A sentiment of "we've seen it all before" and we'll get through it. Nevertheless, mingled in amongst this was a feeling of cautious optimism that opportunities are presenting themselves.

5th International Hotel Conference in Rome - expansion and trends

Rome (October 26, 2007). This year, the hotel industry world wide will see increased room yield (RevPar). At the same time, the number of hotels in planning and construction will continue to rise on all continents. The never ending discussions surrounding the chronic shortages of personnel thus take on new significance, as talks at the 5th International Hotel Conference (IHC) in Rome last week all too closely showed. Nevertheless, the hotels contributing to podium discussions didn't exactly make the impression that they were actively doing too much about it. Creativity is also needed with respect to "niche discovery". Ideas are in abundance, it's the courage to implement them that's lacking. Over 400 participants met for casual networking in Rome as increasingly the IHC makes its name as the pleasant counterpart to the empty International Hotel Investment Conference in Berlin in March.

IHC LOGO

Rome (October 20, 2006). With each passing year, the International Hotel Conference in Rome - organised by American Morris Lasky - is becoming an ever more important meeting point for professionals from investment, finance and development. Efficient and European orientated, it sets itself apart from the very much US and UK centred Hotel Investment Conference in Berlin. Here the learning curve hasn't come to an end. The show effect of Berlin was attempted in vain; what's important here though, is networking and contents. A report on branch development, real estate sales, on Russia and boutique hotels.
