It is about more than sustainable real estate and hotel concepts: The legislature now includes social issues and nature. The HITT Think Tank tells you what is relevant. / Photo: adobe stock metamorworks |
Augsburg/Berlin (March 31, 2023). The programme of the 6th HospitalityInside Think Tank (HITT) on 26/27 June in Berlin is getting more exciting with each additional expert commitment. And more concrete, because the EU taxonomy is putting a time stamp on more and more sustainability rules. As of next year, companies will already have to take greater account of environmental, social and employee concerns. So which macro factors affect the hotel industry and how? Only the HITT can explain this: compactly in 1.5 days and with the help of exactly those movers & shakers who even work for the legislators in the background. The HITT Think Tank is anything but classic conferencing.
"Given the highly dynamic nature of the legislature, it becomes extremely important to keep track of and select which drivers are relevant in the next steps," underlines HITT moderator Tim Davis. "A platform like HITT provides hoteliers and investors with guidance through the high-profile international experts who themselves sit on important committees and help define standards such as content."
The title of this year's HITT Think Tank "Next level: Measure. Benchmark. Drive. Lifting sustainability from intention to traction" captures the current situation: documenting measurement data is becoming elementarily important, as it will serve future benchmarking, which banks, among others, use for lending. But it is no longer just about numbers, but also about the soft, non-financial criteria, through which the environment, nature and the relationship with employees are currently moving much more into the limelight.
Everyone interacts, collaborates
Tim Davis, who has been moderating the - English-language - think tank since its premiere and curates the content together with HospitalityInside editor-in-chief Maria Puetz-Willems, emphasises the advantages of this small, fine event for a maximum of 60 guests: "The HITT impulses have nothing to do with the usual conference-typical speeches. HITT is about quality content, one session builds on the previous one, every participant should be able to casually contribute at any time, ask their questions and express their concerns. We interact, provoke, brainstorm".
This has already worked six times. HITT is business & fun. The atmosphere on the ship is inspiring, the participants - C-level executives - discuss in a relaxed way in a circle of chairs, throw the micro-cube at each other and simply feel comfortable in casual dress, sneakers and jeans. Here, everyone shares their knowledge with everyone else, there is no hierarchy, but a lot of collaboration. 94% of HITT participants rated Think Tank 2022 as "very good".
The Upside Potential in Change
The hospitality industry is located in a significant interface between the legislature and society. Hotels are themselves a reflection of society, a mirror of various interest groups, from investors and business partners to customers/guests, their own employees, the neighbourhood and the nature surrounding them.
"And this is exactly where a great upside potential is hiding", Tim Davis underlines. More than almost any other industry, hospitality companies automatically come into contact with many stakeholders, and because of their social attitude (hospitality) they are able to "naturally" fulfil many requirements of an EU taxonomy.
Learning to link numbers
At HITT 2023 we link the world of evaluative numbers with the world of priceless values. From the programme:
Florian Huber, co-founder of EYCarbon, EY, will shed light on the benefits and pitfalls of "measurement", how to manage measurement figures and how to handle them in an ESG-compliant way, also in sustainability reports. However, measurement results must also be implemented in order to further reduce the carbon footprint in a traceable way. This can only be achieved with the right technology tools - the topic of the following discussion.
The counterpart to the measurement and benchmarking figures is Malin Lindfors Speace, founder and CEO of the Scandinavian consultancy Ethos. She explains how to implement social activities and requirements on the part of the EU in a measurable way. So that one can also prove around the planet how far people's quality of life will continue to improve in the future.
Bridging the gap to nature is Zaneta Sedilekova, Director of Climate and Biodiversity Risk at the UK Climate Law Lab. The young lawyer looks at the biodiversity of animals, plants, fungi and microorganisms as well as the diversity of ecosystems - both underestimated factors for investors and operators. What are the main
risks for companies if they remain inactive?
The HITT programme has been updated as of this morning and you will find more new high-profile speakers on the HITT website, whom we call "pulse generators". And it's up to you to add your own impulse.
HospitalityInside is expecting commitments from more experts in the next few days. And we will present the individual sessions to you in detail from now on.
